Every time I read the Great Gatsby I get frustrated. I mean it’s full of metaphor, shady characters, and cause and affect that some times really make you wonder who these people really are. While I am reading it I feel like I am doing a chore but after word I reflect on it.
Yes reading the book is a task in itself but as Alyssa and
Devon pointed out to me in previous comments these people are actually like some real life people.
There are people out there who fall in love with a woman and try to raise their status to extremes just to win their love back. There are also men who don’t appreciate or care about their wives until other men covet them. There is always that naïve neutral character in life that you always just want to say, listen you are stupid for believing everything you hear. Then there is that bazaar self centered gossiping fool of a girl who no one ever trusts or can take seriously. So I applaud Fitzgerald for making his characters seem like real people.
Lastly the other thing I would like to explain is something that I said in class because I do not think I was understood due to the fact that I am terrified to speak in public and I stumble on what I am trying to get across.
I was taught the first time around that
Wilson was the only character in the book that was really putting in 110%. He married his wife. Even though he was poor he still loved her. He tried to support her as best as he could.
Wilson worked every day in the garage trying to earn money to give Myrtle a better life which is what the American Dream really is. It’s the chance to improve your status and standing in life in terms of society and wealth. Myrtle harmed the American Dream by going out with Tom and slapped the American opportunity [dream] in the face. Because of this she was killed. This does make sense to me. I hope it makes more sense to everyone else now. I didn’t know that how I explained it in class was so out there.

This book is outrageous and extremely annoying even though it is a fast read. Let’s review the characters. Jordan Baker is a lying cheating little athlete who brings a disgrace to the occupation title of athlete. She is a careless hypocrite. “Other people are careful…I hate careless people.”
Tom is a joke. He is so horrible I can’t choose what to hate more about him that he is racist, “We need to preserve the white race so the others don’t take over.” Or the fact that he goes around willingly showing off to having a mistress to his wife’s cousin. “Let’s get off here I want you to meet my girl.” Now let us touch on the fact that he has a wife that he doesn’t love or pay attention to until another man gets interested in her. He is an obnoxious self righteous character. He only pieces together the important people with money. Then he gets offended when Gatsby calls him a Polo player. “I’d rather not be the polo player.” He tells Gatsby. Well that is exactly what you are Mr. Old money get over it.
Next there is Daisy. My God thank you for not letting me be as stupid as this character. She sits around in her house and does nothing all day wondering, “What do people plan?” People plan to have lives unlike you. She always talks so fake like a bad
Hollywood movie damsel in distress kind of speech I really hate it. Daisy needs to make up her mind who she wants. Will it be Tom or Gatsby? And what is all this nonsense about being repulsed at Gatsby’s party. “People were going from nothing to nothing.” Isn’t that what you are doing Daisy. You do nothing and then you complain about it. Daisy ignores her daughter and only displays her for show as if she were a diamond ring. What is wrong with you woman? You detest Tom but you love Gatsby but yet you can’t say it because you once loved Tom. You once loved Gatsby also. Talk about villains of the story you are the true villain. Your actions in the car are what destroy your chances of being with Gatsby.
Myrtle, I’ll try to contain my rant to simply this. Her husband is the only person in this novel that is true, hard working, and devoted to their spouse and she cheats on him. Can you say ungrateful hussy? She got hers in the end though.
Gatsby is a strange character. He comes up from small wealth. Then he meets Daisy but has to go to war. He does not come back and fight for his love. No, he chooses to work to build up fortune in corrupt ways that he can’t speak about. Then he moves to near where she lives to try and draw her in to his parties. He knows she is married. Not only has he used people to get what he wants. He hangs out with gamblers and has a total flip and switch moment. In the beginning of the book he didn’t care about the rumors that were spread about him. Then after Daisy is disgusted by his party he fires his staff because they gossiped when he never did anything to stop the gossiping in the first place. Make up your mind. Not only that if you want to steal Daisy away from Tom be a man and face them both. Just come out and say it do not wait until near the end of the book. You look like a coward.
Nick, I can simply say he is the most naive character I ever read about. Just because someone tells you a story does not mean it is true. Hello!

When I hear about American Literature I think about a ton of the books I have read. Great Books such as the Great Gatsby show the area of the swinging twenties it was time when sex, love, murder, and partying were at a
high point. I think about Night which is a novel about a young boy who lived through the holocaust. He experienced the torture physically and mentally of the concentration camps. All though this novel is not set in
America many times it is classified as American literature because the author wrote it after he came to the states. There are many more books that I can name but that would go on for ever.
The title American Literature is familiar to me. However loosely defined we can describe it as literature written in
America. As I have grown I’ve learned that there is more to it than that. To understand American Literature you can not just read a book and leave it at that. You need to read about the authors. Then you can move on to the text. While reading, you can not just skim the material. You need be engaged and have a dialogue with the text. Also when trying to understand American literature we need to realize that not everyone will agree on what books should be included on the American Literature Canon.
To me American Literature only makes sense when it is set in
America or the writer writes the work while staying here. Usually works of American Literature have to do with big subjects that
America has seen and dealt with such as racism, sex, murder, drugs, scandals, money and so on and so forth. We relate to all these works in some way or can identify with them.
